Historically, Tuesday nights have been on par with some of our bloodiest wars. Devil in a Woodpile held their usual residency at the Hideout, while a mere mile away the Jeff Parker Trio filled Rodan’s Tuesday night slot. Roommates would bicker over which show to attend. Loved ones would cry. ”You’re choosing country music over Jazz!? Expect to sleep on the couch tonight, Johnny.”
But winters are harsh on Chicago. Though my knowledge concerning the schizm in Devil in a Woodpile is little, we can be sure that they no longer play Hideout’s Tuesday night slot.
So now, the winter of our discontent is over? Hardly.
The Hideout, in an effort to continue their celebration of Country/Old Time/Bluegrass music have implemented Country Music Tuesdays. If Devil in a Woodpile was the slow drip of moonshine, the Lawrence Peters Outfit is a tall shot of Jack.
The Lawrence Peters Outfit, stands up as a confident, homage to the country greats of yore. Peters’ croon moves with the steady grace of a man burned by love. His “outfit” is just as convincing; the guitars play nicely somewhere between Bob Wills and Keith Richards, and the bass chugs with the force of a solid country beat.
The war rages on between the beboppers and those confederate sympathizers. Tuesday night texts still coax us to our sides of the battlefield. And while many fans of live music are able to skate between Rodan and the Hideout with the talent of these cats, we can be sure that great decision will still have to be made every Tuesday evening.
