Hard Times

Bonnie “Prince” Billy is playing tonight at Chicago’s Vic Theatre.
Beware, folk troubadour Will Oldham’s latest release, came out yesterday via Drag City.  Building off his usual earth tones and southern gothic mysticism, Oldham has created an album worthy of the media blitz being slapped across indie blogs and record stores.
Drag City released Beware in a number of formats.  HardTimes opted for the 10” Chijimi, which includes four songs not included on the full length and a digital download.  ”Interesting,” you say?  Not as interesting as the mug that came with the purchase.
You can now sip coffee out of the guy’s head while reading the endless Bonnie “Prince” Billy reviews and profiles.  Normally I’d be a bit suspect, but according to a piece in the New Yorker “[Oldham] intends to promote the album with singles, a photo shoot, and a handful of interviews, if only to prove that record promotion doesn’t really work, at least not for him.”
While the bros getting St. Patrick’s Day slammed will be missed at tonight’s performance, it should still be a fun evening.  And for all you improvised music lovers out there, Josh Abrams - along with playing bass on the new album - will be holding down the low end.
