Hard Times

Hard times for British poppers Black Lace, who are rereleasing their song “Agadoo.”  In 2003, “Agadoo” was voted worst song of all time by a panel of music critics for Q magazine. The whole mess is a bit confusing -if not comical:

In 1986, Dene Michael replaced founder Colin Routh (who now goes by Colin Gibb) after Routh had an affair with a minor.  But “Agadoo” was on the charts in 1984 - two years before Michael ever filled the shoes of the ol’ perv Routh.  It’s worse than Mike Love still touring as The Beach Boys.  Michael had nothing to do with the song.  According to the band’s website (which is only one page), their publishing company went “belly up,” and the royalties for “Agadoo” were lost.  I like to believe they blew all their money on Hawaiian printed short sleeves, and are now exploiting themselves for that yankee dollar.

Does anyone else have the insatiable craving for Runts?

Let’s take a gander at some highlights from their discography:

1984 Black Lace
1984 Party Party
1985 Party Party 2
1986 Party Crazy
1987 16 Greatest Party Hits
1990 20 All Time Party Favourites
1993 Action Party
1995 Saturday Night
1997 Greatest Hits
1998 What a Party

They really named an album Action Party.    And on 20 All Time Party Favourites, Black Lace does a really impressive medley of Y.M.C.A./In the Navy.  These guys are so annoyingly cliche, they become a bit endearing.  I can’t resist.
